Whistler Village

Thanks to the 2010 Summer Olympics, Whistler, BC has been getting a lot of attention, but this picturesque mountain village has been a local favorite for many years. Though a lot of its popularity comes from the world-class skiing/snowboarding that can be found at Whistler-Blackcomb, summer getaways at Whistler are getting plenty of buzz. Plus, summer is “off-season” at Whistler, so you’ll find that there are good deals on packages that you won’t find during the prime “ski season” months.

Whistler Village is a small hamlet filled with great food, pubs and shopping. The mountains and lakes provide a spectacular backdrop to the alpine architecture, and, since Whistler Village is pedestrian only, you won’t need to worry about the hassle of traffic or parking. Take a stroll around the Village and you’ll find about 200 stores and 90 restaurants to satisfy all of your dining and shopping needs. My personal recommendations? Shop Whistler village in summer for deals on your ski and snow gear and don’t miss having a fondue dinner to complete the “alpine experience.”

After such a mild winter in Seattle this year, I almost didn’t notice that spring is in full swing except the days are getting longer and already the city is alive with vibrant tulips and fragrant cherry blossoms. When I am not stopping to smell the flowers these days, I am working on my spring “to do” list for Seattle. When it comes to having fun I am a big fan of bargains, and nothing adds to the fun like free!

Seattle Cheese Festival

Friends enjoying cheese samples at the Seattle Cheese Festival

Here is what is on my short list:

  1. Seattle Cheese Festival (May 15-16) – Held in the famed Pike Place Market, wander about The Cheese Concourse sampling artisanal cheeses from Washington and around the world. This will be my third year attending in a row!
  2. Free Sailboat Rides (every Sunday) – Seattle’s Center for Wooden Boats generously sponsors free boat rides on Lake Union. You can go year around but the warming weather makes me want to go now.
  3. The Ballard Locks – Beautiful botanical gardens, boats, and the fascinating fish ladder are all good reasons to visit this free spot any time of the year. In the spring, however, fish flumes are installed to allow young salmon to migrate from the fresh water to the Puget Sound and you can watch them as they pop through.  Locks cruises are also available for purchase.
  4. Seattle Sculpture Park

The Olympic Sculpture Park boasts a beautiful view of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. You can walk or ride your bike along its waterfront trail.

  5. Olympic Sculpture Park – Along the waterfront and next door to Victoria Clipper docks at Pier 69 is nine-acres of free art including the iconic Eagle by Alexander Calder. My favorite piece to visit, Neukom Vivarium by Mark Dion, is a sixty-foot-long “nurse log” in a custom designed green house. Both educational and beautiful, the Vivarium is always changing and will bursting with life in these warmer months.
  6. Central Library Tour – In case of the inevitable April shower, duck into the stunning and contemporary Central Library in downtown Seattle for a free guided architectural tour of the eleven-story building designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Ramus. If you happen to miss the tour group, download the self-guided tour and explore the “Mixing Chamber” and “Books Spiral” for yourself.

What is on your Spring “to-do” list this year?
