United States Thanksgiving is probably not all that exciting for those in Canada (unless you have family in the US), however the day after is something that’s great for pretty much everyone who has to get some holiday shopping done: Black Friday! The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year in the United States and retailers have amazing deals-especially for those who are willing to get up early!

We were so excited to have the Clipper mentioned on the Today Show last week by local blogger, Hip Travel Mama. We thought that she did a fantastic job getting the word out as to why the Northwest is a great travel destination.

Fall Things to Do

Photo: Benjamin D. Esham / Wikimedia Commons

Summer is winding down and it’s time to start thinking about fun fall activities to do with family and friends. The first activities that come to my mind are: pumpkin patches, corn mazes and hay rides! Washington has countless farms that provide all of these activities! A great farm to keep in mind is:

Biringer Farm Corn Maze and Pumpkins – 3.7 mile trail

Dates: October 29-31 Read the rest of this entry »

Victoria, BC can be at its most charming during the cooler months and there are so many reasons to go! Just as the air gets crisp in early fall, the timing is right to check out the area’s many cideries. A little later in October, celebrate the spookier side of the season with a Haunted Victoria Tour. You also have until October 31, to try a ziplining adventure including the very adventurous night zip. If your vacation style is more low-key, Victoria hosts two amazing Afternoon Teas; at the Empress Hotel and at Butchart Gardens. Either will keep you toasty. Read the rest of this entry »

Baby Orca and Mom

Photo Creative Commons Licensed by Shawn Kinkade

June and July have been very exciting months for whale watching!  There are two baby Orcas:  L pod saw a new addition in June, and just last week a baby from K pod was spotted.  All the whales in a pod contribute to care of a baby, so expect to see the baby Orca around all the other pod members.

Every Victoria Clipper sailing has seen whales so far in July, and all but one boat saw whales in June for a 97% success rate for whale sightings overall! Over the last week, there have been two extra exciting tours: on July 7th there was a super pod of whales (where multiple pods of whales were all moving together) and on July 11th, while the boat was stopped and shut off, whales came right up to the Victoria Clipper III.  In addition to whales, most tours typically see harbor seals and other local wildlife, such as eagles and deer. The annual Bite of Seattle is going on Friday-Sunday featuring live comedy and music, a demonstration stage featuring local celebrity chefs and (of course) tons of food!  As always, the Bite has free admission, although you do have to pay for food once you’re inside.  This year, the Bite is introducing “Just a Bite” where each restaurant will feature one small menu item for $3.75, allowing attendees to sample more food for less money than in past years.  The Alley is always a popular feature where, for a $10 admission, you get a full meal’s worth of samples from various local restaurants such as Andaluca, PinkaBella, and Belltown Pub. Seattle Walking Tour App As one of the contributing writers to the Victoria Clipper Blog, I’m so passionate about my two favorite northwest cities, Victoria and Seattle, that I’ve written an iTunes App to help you when you visit the Emerald City.  In my experience there’s no better way to explore a metropolis than on foot and with a local guide, because, let’s face it; getting lost can ruin a short trip. Now of course if you have all the time in the world getting lost can be the source of great discovery or you could end up in Australia’s Outback with scary kangaroos. Nobody wants that. Trust me! Been there. Not fun. Read the rest of this entry »

Why is it called a duck boat you ask? Simply, it is a truck and a boat that ventures through the streets of Seattle and then plunges into the waters of Lake Union. In fact “the boat is as an amphibious landing craft developed by the United States Army during World War II. It was designed to deliver cargo from ships at sea directly to the shore. The DUKW (D-built in 1942, U-amphibious 2½ ton truck, K-front wheel drive, W-rear wheel drive) was equipped with a hull pump that could move 260 gallons of water a minute! It also came with a hand pump that could move 50 gallons a minute. It could climb a 60% grade and broach an 18-inch high obstacle. It had a range of 220 miles on land and 50 miles in water. It could carry a cargo load of 5,350 lbs., and hold 25 fully equipped troops.” So now you know! Read More

Working downtown I often see the Ride The Ducks boats pass through the streets with dancing and laughing passengers. Depending on my mood I do one of two things 1. Wave back at them OR 2. Roll my eyes and laugh internally. Secretly, I have always been jealous of those duck riders. I decided it was high time I give the duck tour a try.

Captain Tuck N Roll

My father-in-law came to visit so I figured what better excuse then to take an out of towner on a duck tour? So we grabbed our quackers (“Wacky Quackers are noisemakers in the shape of a duck bill! Not just for kids, Wacky Quackers are a fun way to participate in the experience of your tour! Good for a thousand QUACKS!”) and we were off!

Captain Tuck N’ Roll was our fearless leader through the busy streets of Seattle. I have lived here pretty much my entire life, but still he told us stories about the history of Seattle that I didn’t know. In example, there is a huge house boat on Lake Union that doesn’t look like a boat (and really isn’t a boat), but in order to comply with legalities about having a house boat on Lake Union the owner is forced to prove that his house is in fact a boat and….. oh I don’t want to ruin the story, you will just have to take the tour for yourself.

What are you waiting for, get quacky and wacky at Ride The Ducks of Seattle.
