My husband and I love the San Juan Islands! We’ve taken several trips to the islands over the years and have so many wonderful memories. Last Saturday, after completing our weekend chores we decided to make it a day trip to the San Juan Islands. Read the rest of this entry »
Hi! I’m the online voice of the Clipper – among other things.
I love to sail and backpack in the Pacific Northwest. Two of my favorite spots are Sucia Island in the San Juans and Seven Lakes Basin in the Olympics. I live in Seattle and enjoy coffee, yoga, and gardening.

We’d like to extend a special welcome aboard to Karen Roland – mom extraordinaire! She was nominated by her daughter Liz, who wrote a stellar essay about what makes her mom extraordinary. Before they boarded this morning, I caught up with Karen and Liz to ask a few questions.
Tassie: Did you know Liz had written and submitted the essay nominating you?
Karen: NO! It was a complete surprise. I cried when Liz told me we were going to Victoria and read her essay to me.
Tassie: What did you think about your daughter’s essay?
Karen: Wow! I thought, “You appreciate me!” I even bragged a little bit.
I could tell she was thrilled and honored by such a gift – often times all the little things moms do go unnoticed – how great to be recognized and appreciated in such a way!
So I asked what her husband was doing this weekend while she was away. This mom doesn’t stop – she put together a weekend itinerary for her husband and son (age 21) and prepared meals – apparently they’ll be spending the weekend fishing. It’s obvious she deeply cares for their well being.
For she and Liz, this is their annual trip to Victoria – of course this year is more special. They plan on visiting Butchart Gardens (Liz wants to test out her new camera), the Jazz Festival, and the Royal BC Museum and will be enjoying their stay at the fabulous Hotel Grand Pacific.
It was great meeting this extraordinary mom and her daughter – Safe Travels!

When I moved from Detroit to Seattle five years ago, my husband and I were immediately drawn to Pioneer Square. It’s historic charm, architectural masterpieces, and urban ruggedness had a hint a familiarity.
Heralded as the birthplace of modern Seattle – it was settled in 1852, and then rebuilt in 1889 after burning to the ground. Read the rest of this entry »
