If you live in the Northwest you are probably in agreement that this winter has been long and arduous. Because of it I am immensely looking forward to spring, sun and Tulips!

Today, I spoke with someone from Tulip Town, to get the low down on the upcoming Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. I learned that this year they have added 30 new varieties of never-been-seen-anywhere-ever tulips. I am told they will be gorgeous, lush tulip hybrids for your viewing pleasure. They will be located next to the windmill building. The new varieties will show themselves at different stages of the season , so some will be early, some middle and some late season, so that you are sure to see some whenever you decide to go.

Also new this year, there will be free trolley rides every Wednesday in April.

3 Great Reasons to Go To Victoria before March 6th

I am a little late in writing about this, but Dine Around & Stay In Town Victoria is happening now and going on until March 6th. What is Dine Around and Stay in Town you ask?

It is a time when participating restaurants in Victoria offer 3 course meals for $20, $30 and $40 and participating hotels offer great rates to stay in town. I went through the various menu options and found a few restaurants that get good reviews and are offering delectable food.

There is nothing like the Northwest Flower and Garden show to make me feel worse about how tore up my backyard looks after a rough winter. Luckily, the purpose of the show is to inspire creativity (and nobody can see the current state of my yard!).

I have noticed that there is something different about people who garden. They have a peaceful look about them. Some harbor pure excitement for gardening. One person who comes to mind… Ciscoe Morris! Ciscoe will be in attendance in addition to a long list of featured speakers who possess a multitude of accolades.

“They Will Not by Stumped!
Ciscoe & Meeghan Answer Your Toughest Garden Questions!
Saturday, February 26 at 12:45 pm in the Rainier Room”

The 2011 Flower and Garden show is next week, February 23 – 27th at the Washington State Convention Center. If you are traveling to Seattle to attend the show you can purchase your travel package including show tickets, here

The Inn at Laurel Point hotel in Victoria, BC is officially inviting brides-to-be and wedding enthusiasts to attend Victoria’s first ever high-end wedding show.  This is not your typical wedding show. Instead of battling a huge crowd at an enormous convention hall, this is swanky evening event where upon arrival you will be greeted with a cocktail and a sense of sophistication.  The hosts of this event have gone out of their way to make this a paperless event. So instead of wandering aisles of booths picking up more pamphlets and cards than your recycle bin can hold, you get to walk, drink in hand, through elegant rooms and areas of the exquisite Laurel Point Inn to perform your wedding research.

Like other wedding shows, there will be local vendors in attendance like, photographers, florists, bakers, DJs, and stylists, but the atmosphere will allow for fun conversation and the ability for you to explore what interests you.  The fashion show will take place under an outdoor tent (with heat lamps) in their beautifully manicured Japanese garden. There you will get the chance to ooh and awe over your favorite designer gowns. You will have the opportunity to see parts of the hotel that you wouldn’t typically see, like The 5th Floor and the Penthouse. Smaller weddings have become an increasingly popular trend and the penthouse is reserved for these intimate occasions.

Upon departing you will not leave empty handed. The hosts have a special departing package for each guest so as to remember the evening.

Event Date: March 5th, 2011

Admittance to the show: $25

You can learn more about exhibitors and purchase tickets here

Last February 27th an estimated 3000 people congregated in Langley, Whidbey Island with only one question in mind. Who killed Yuri?

Who dunit? And why?

Each year, since 1984, the town has gathered for the annual Langley Mystery Weekend. The “Mystery” is an interactive play which takes place all over the little town of Langley on South Whidbey Island. Gather clues, speak to townsfolk who are in character and try to solve the crime. Written by local authors and involving live local actors roaming the streets as well as additional “suspects” including the mayor, the police chief, shop keepers, the librarian, and basically the whole town.

In the end, it was determined that Yuri’s Aunt Alexandra Nuluc Dickins was the perpetrator behind the 26th annual Langley mystery weekend, she was the one who did him in, to save him from becoming a vampire!

It is nearly impossible to pin down my favorite song by Sarah Mclachlan. I know that my favorite CD is Mirrorball. I reach for that CD (yes, I still listen to the actual CD and have not yet added it to my I-Pod), when I am in need of something soulful to re-energize me.

She has unleashed a new disc called, Laws of Illusion, and she is back on tour. On March 1st she will perform at  the Save On Foods Memorial Center in Victoria, BC. She just performed in Seattle last weekend at the Paramount.

I read through lyrics from her new disc and as usual it does not disappoint. If you are a fan of Sarah I encourage you to read through this short biography which gives great insight into what she has been doing the last seven years since her last album.

Seattle Pastry Girl is at it again. Her most recent endeavor? Oatmeal cookies.

I know that typically football food includes things like wings, chips, beer, and dips. Maybe what you are lacking is a simple delicious recipe for a good all time standby, oatmeal cookies. At the very least there are bound to be some kids running loose while you are watching the game and oatmeal cookies are a good “compromise treat”.

Cookie Recipe

Oatmeal Cookie Ingredients:
Makes about 3 dozen

60 grams (2.12 ounces) of wheat flour
140 grams (5 ounces) of soft brown sugar
170 grams ( 6 ounces) of oatmeal
2 teaspoons of baking powder
2 small pinches of salt
150 grams (5 ounces) of butter

If you have a scale use it to measure in grams which is how this recipe appeared. I used an online converter to list the ounce equivalent.
